According to the National Safety Council, 30 children lost their lives in hot cars in 2022 alone. Heatstroke is one of the leading causes of non-crash related fatalities among children, resulting in serious injury or even death. The statistics are alarming, with an average of 38 children dying from heat-related deaths after being trapped inside vehicles every year.

The danger is real and can occur quickly. On a hot day, a car can heat up by 20 degrees in just 10 minutes, making it deadly within minutes. As Carrie Conger, Traffic Safety Information Specialist, notes, 'Heatstroke begins when the body's core reaches 104 degrees and at approximately 107 degrees is lethal.'

To combat this issue, the Lawrence County Child Passenger Safety Program offers presentations on traffic safety topics, including teen driver safety, older drivers, car seat safety, bicycle safety, and more. The program aims to educate the general public on any traffic-related topic, providing valuable information and resources.

The Traffic Safety Program is a partnership between agencies and individuals working together to identify priority traffic safety problems and develop viable solutions to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities on the roads in St. Lawrence County. This collaboration includes the Correctional Division (Sheriffs Office), among other organizations.
